Hilarious!

Electro Nantais.

Minitel Rose, the awesome French electro-kids of Valerie, has send this album-teaser in the world to promote the release of debut album Atlantique on 7 June 2010. Moreover they've also given us a preview of a very promising track called Wild Bird.

We Are The Underworld.

Thé We Are The World isn't the unbelievably lame charity-song of Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, recently remade by some "great" artists like Justin-I wanna be black-Bieber for Haiti.

Thé We Are The World is an Über-cool experimental electro-band from L.A.
Some months ago they released the extremely awesome track Clay Stones, with one of the best music-videos I've ever seen. Also the Turbotito remix of Clay Stones was superbe.

This month, on 6 April, their début album, also called Clay Stones, was finally released.

Clay Stones is full of dark and mysterious rhythms with many tribal influences and amazing beats.
The darkness reminds me of Fever Ray and also the artyness of this band is to good to be true.
However the album is 100 times wilder than Fever Ray. They use experimental electro to power up the very tense rhythms and vocals.
Somehow, this is fine track for a sort of arty horror-movie,...about drugs or so.

Anyhow this foursome convinced me of their genius talent.
Clay Stones begins with Foot Follows Foot (great title), a crescendo of tribal drums ends into a smooth beat and a very The Knife-like melody and vocals.
Fight Song is full of aggressive electro and freaky lyrics. Nice!
But the electro becomes even wilder in Afire, my ears almost can't follow the high-speed beats.
And also the rest of the songs are dark as hell and the weirdness of the electro sounds incredibly dangerous but in a very positive way.
We Are The World ends with a spooky Lord Have Ass, and that's it for their fantastic début album.
Although I'm not a huge fan of all the songs (by example Goya Monster is not a highlight) I'm still very much impressed.

Their gigs are said to be great too, they like to dress up and stuff. I hope I'll be able to see them one day!

Enjoy the wild dark world of WATW.

Tracklist:

1 Foot Follows Foot
2 Clay Stones
3 Fight Song
4 Lie Like The Forest
5 Afire
6 Not In Death
7 Clover & Dirt
8 Goya Monster
9 Sweet Things Are So Hard
10 Lord Have Ass

Iamhadrianwhohadrian.

Iamamiwhoami - o : the new and amazing song of the most mysterious artist of 2010. With a wonderful clip. This is one of my favourite tracks of the moment.

Yoav - Yellowbrite Smile: I've known this song and movie for a while now but now it's finally on youtube so I can share it with you guys. In the meantime Yoav's new album A Foolproof Escape Plan is available.

Awhooo.

The nerdy gents of Hot Chip covered Shakira's She Wolf. Quite funny, but that's not difficult with such a freak-song.

Tin Man.

Future Islands - Tin Man

Dan og Mark.

The Kingdom of Denmark, the largest nation of the European Union (if you count Greenland with them) and a spring of creativity.
Stoffer Og Maskinen is a new electro-pop band from Copenhague.
It's a duo, the band name is just a combination their names: Stoffer and Maskinen.
And that's like all I know of them, their website and myspace are in Danish so...
However, They might be gay? They look gay as hell (with all respect).

Anyhow they've just released their eponymous début album (or they're about to release it).
And I'm totally in love with it.
S&M use a lot of pop and electro but are not affraid to melt it with some alternative indie rock. Moreover I can really hear some influences of Mew in it, that other Danish band.
Their tracks are sometimes very epic, dramatic and even ambient/shoegaze.
Don't forget to listen to the beautiful instrumental track, Uden Titel (no title), with those awesome strings.

I just can't praise them enough, I hope you'll enjoy them too.

Tracklist:

01. Flader Mod Flader 03:19
02. De Eneste Tilbage 03:54

The Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium.

Although I normally write about music, today I'm going to focus on art.

Since I've visited the Royal Museum Of Fine Arts of Belgium (RMFAB) in Brussels yesterday, I feel the need to tell you guys about it.

The great cities of Europe have their famous museums. Paris has the Louvre and Centre Pompidou, London has British Museum, Tate Modern etc., Madrid has the Prado, Rome has the Vatican Museums. Like those big cities, Brussels has the RMFAB.

In contrast with the 5.000.000 visitors/year of the British Museum, the RMFAB even hasn't got 1/10 of that. And that's absolutely wonderful. You can enjoy the magnificent art, in a quiet environment, how it should be, not with thousands and thousands of annoying idiots around your head.

And if you would think that there aren't many visitors because the art isn't that great, forget it. The RMFAB is the greatest undiscovered treasure of Belgium.

Among many and many others the museum has art of (15th Century) Rogier Van Der Weyden (16th century) Jan Brueghel, Peter Brueghel I & II, (17th/18th Century) Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony Van Dyck, Jaques-Louis David, (19th century) Henry Van De Velde, James Ensor, Vincent Van Gogh, Edward Burne-Jones, (20th Century) René Magritte, Pablo Picasso, Paul Delvoux, Karel Appel, Salvador Dali, Panamarenko, Francis Bacon, Jan Fabre, Luc Tuymans, Marcel Broodthaers and Joan Miro.

The museum is quite gigantic with many galleries and a beautiful Big hall. It even has a gallery with enormous paintings of Rubens. I'm talking about paintings which are taller than my house. The RMFAB has probably the second largest collection of Rubens-art in the world (after the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Antwerp).

This is one of the gigantic pieces of Rubens, called the Torture of St. Levinas.
His tongue is pulled out of his mouth and fed to the dog. Great! Isn't it?

Another incredible painting is The Death of Marat (Le Mort De Marat) of Jaques-Louis David. This world-famous piece shows Jean-Paul Marat, stabbed in his bath. Marat was a radical journalist and one of the important politicians during the French Revolution. He was killed by one of his enemies who blamed him to be responsible for the September Massacres.
Napoleon exiled David, who was a friend of Marat, to Brussels where he stayed for the rest of his days, that's why his family gave the painting to the museum.
The Death Of Marat is still seen as one of the most important images of the French Revolution.

The museum also has many works of Jan Brueghel and Pieter Brueghel the Elder, as well of Pieter Brueghel the Younger.
For me, the absolute highlight of their collection is Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus.
It's the most famous image about the story of Icarus, and yet the original painting is in the RMFAB.
The English Poet H.Auden even made a poem about it with the name Musée des Beaux-Arts after the RMFAB.

One of the important themes of the paintings in the museum is "The Temptation of St. Anthony". You can find a very good copy of The big triptych painting of Flemish primitive Hieronymus Bosch in the Museum. In those times, the artists made more than one exemplar of their paintings.

And also "The Temptation of St. Anthony" made by Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali is enjoying the attention in the RMFAB.
It's one of Dali's most important paintings and it is said to be influenced by the version of H. Bosch. Belgium is so proud to have the original masterpiece they've put it on Belgian Postmarks.

When you've seen the ancient art collection you can descend through the museum to the Modern art which is not less than 8 floors under street-level.

One of the finest pieces the museum possesses is The Pope And The Owls of Francis Bacon. The Irish painter made 35 pope-portrets, they represent pope Innocentius X and are based on the portret made by Spanish master Diego Velasquez. Bacon wants to undermine the worthy portret of Velasquez by painting a very expressionistic version of it. Francis Bacon wants to show the true nature of humanity, just like Edward Munch.

Velasquez' version:

Some of my other highlights of the museum are:

Rogier Van Der Weyden - De Bewening, Nood Gods (The Lamentation): beautiful piece of the second most important painter of his time (after Van Eyck).

Pieter Brueghel The Elder - Fall of Rebel Angels:

Jan Baptist Conneroy - View On Brussels: gigantic and amazing view on Brussels in the 17th century.

Edward Burne-Jones - The Wedding of Psyche:

Jan Fabre - : A big globe, full of green bugs.

The museum itself is also one of the most underrated buildings of Brussels, at the back of it there is a magnificent court which is under restoration. But You'll never find a tourist there.

The museum isn't even expensive at all, for 2 euro's you're go to go when you're a student. You can combine your visit with the new museum of the Belgian surrealistic painter Magritte.

I hope I've convinced you all to go and have a look in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium. More information about the Museum and it's collection: www.fine-arts-museum.be

Fake handshakes.

Wonderful , that's how you could describe the 3rd album of UK band Kyte.
After two promising albums they've now released, Dead Waves. Although that's what I conclude after checking them out on the world wide web, however some sources speak about Dead Waves as their first LP.

Kyte comes from Leicester, which isn't an industrial city like Manchester and Liverpool but also produces fine music (like Kasabian).
They make neo-shoegaze, also called nu-gaze which can be considered as the 3rd generation of shoegaze.
So they're more M83-like, not Slowdive or My Blood Valentine.
They're quite popular in the UK and seem to do well in Japan.

In fact, in some songs it's hard to tell the difference between M83 and Kyte, now I don't mind cause M83 is one of my all-time favourites.
But Kyte doesn't limit their style to shoegaze, they show us they're not affraid to make some nice disco-pop and indie-rock too.

Most of all, I love their ambient pop sound. The vocalist, Nick Moon, has a beautiful soft voice which remembers me of Delphic.
Kyte uses a lot of electronics which is fantastic, combined with the vocals and ambience. Some people will even classify Dead Waves as space-gaze.
Anyhow I'm touched by this wonderful album and band.

Not only their music is great, I also like their cover art!

Dead Waves will be released on 19 April 2010.

Tracklist:

1. The Smoke Saves Lives
2. ihnfsa
3. You're Alone Tonight

Arty electro-freak.

Le me tell you about Geneva Jacuzzi, a young female artist from California.
Miss Jacuzzi, my dear readers, is sort of a very alternative and arty disco-freak, as well as her music and videos are freaky too.
She uses old-fashioned recording methods so her tracks sounds very low-quality but don't get me wrong, this is perfect for her style. I really like her funky-disco/electro sound.

I can't really compare her with any recent band or artist but her melodies and electro sometimes remind me of Kraftwerk, which is awesome.
Although I don't seem to get a grip on GJ's music it really fascinates me.

Geneva released an album on 23 February, called Lamaze, consisting of 15 tracks. 15 seems a lot but there are several songs lasting less than two or even one minute
My favourites are Gray Wave City, Love Caboose, Do I Sad, Greek Ambassador and Clothes On The Bed.

Tracklist:

01 Clothes On The Bed (2:28)
02 Nonsense Nonsense (3:39)
03 Love Caboose(4:09)
04 Future Past (1:21)
05 Runaway DNA (1:55)
06 Greek Ambassador (4:02)
07 Relay Racer (1:36)
08 Do I Sad? (2:36)
09 Love Stories (0:49)
10 Group Dynamic (3:17)
11 Bad Moods (3:31)
12 Holograph (0:45)
13 Sand Trap (3:09)
14 Gray Wave City (2:33)
15 Zombie Shark (1:58)

Subiza

Although I read some negative critics about the new Delorean album I decided to purchase it anyway. And I'm quite happy I've done so.

Subiza is the 3rd album of this Spanish band. It will be released worldwide on 8 June 2010.
Delorean was formed in Basque Country, but these days it's based in Barcelona (unless their MySpace is lying).
If you're not familiar with their music, allow me to compare them with Air France, MillionYoung and Toro Y Moi. You could describe their style as a electronic version of Animal Collective with a chill-wave edge.

Anyhow, it's a great band and I'm in love with their bright electro-sound à la méthode française (it really reminds me of the musicians who're part of Valerie, the awesome French electro collective).

Subiza consists of 9 tracks, they all are formed on the same principle of chill-wave electro with great synths. But really I don't get bored of it. On the contrary, I find all the songs very pleasant and I hear enough variation to amuse myself. It's truly excellent material for a sunny summer day, their fantastic synths radiate warmth into my ears.
And also the singing is quite nice, kind of Animal Collective/Phoenix-like.
My favourite track is the wild Infinite Desert, brilliant vocals and beats!

Anyhow I would recommend Subiza, it might not amaze you much but it's certainly a decent and beautiful LP.

Tracklist:

01. Stay Close [04:31]
02. Real Love [06:06]
03. Endless Sunset [04:26]
04. Grow [04:41]
05. Simple Graces [04:17]
06. Infinite Desert [04:52]
07. Come Wander [04:20]
08. Warmer Places [04:48]
09. It's All Ours [04:32]

Videotime.

The new video for Flash Delirium of MGMT, directed by Andreas Nilsson, who we know as the brilliant brain behind the image and videos of The Knife and Fever Ray.
It's a freaky video, but it's kind of funny too!

Watch it at MGMT's site: http://www.whoismgmt.com/

And The new video for Monarchy's The Phoenix Alive. It's already the third time this week I'm posting about this song!
If someone was hoping to get to known the real musicians behind Monarchy,...maybe insiders would recognize them on the images, but I can't.

Back and forth.

You might know Operator Please from it's hit Just A Song About Ping Pong.
This young Australian pop band is going to release it's second album, Gloves, on April 26th 2010.

If you don't know the story behind the band, let me inform you. They formed in secondary school, where they participated at a "battle of the bands" competition.
They broke trough with their aforementioned hit and even won an award for it. This all with the consequence that they're probably one of the most popular indie bands of Australia nowadays.

Anyhow, Operator Please isn't that well-known in the rest of the world, but they're still quite young and their music certainly has the universal qualities to make it everywhere.
They remind me of the Uk punk band Gossip. Not that main member Amandah Wilkinson is also a gigantic Lesbian, but she isn't a lightweight either.
Anyhow since their formation they've made some changes of bandmembers, but Amandah sits still firmly on her throne.

Gloves is a good punk-pop album, it has some serious chance to become a commercial success like Gossip.
The first single Logic, was released in February and has it's own video.

Opener Catapult is one of my favourite tracks, it immediately convinces you to listen to the rest of the LP.
Another really strong song is Volcanic, the title already explains that this is a powerful song.
Also Losing Patience is awesome, the electronic sounds deliver a great extra to Amandah's firm voice.

Gloves is a fantastic pop album, these kids have a wonderful carrier in front of them. IF THEY STAY AWAY FROM DRUGS. ^__^

Tracklist:

01 - Catapult
02 - Just Kiss
03 - Logic
04 - Oh My
05 - Back And Forth
06 - Volcanic
07 - Loops
08 - Jealous
09 - Losing Patience
10 - Like Magic

An end has a start.

The Golden Filter deserves the reputation of being one of the best synth-electro duo's of the new decade. This young boy-girl duo from New York will release it's début album Voluspa on April 26th in the UK and almost two months later on June 15th in the USA.

Voluspa is named after the ancient Nordic poem Völuspá, which relates the story of the creation of the world and its coming end.
Anyhow Völuspa was much anticipated by my friends and myself. The singles Solid Gold, Thunderbird and Hide Me (they're also on the album) are unbelievably great, Hide Me is even my second most played track of the last 3 months.

I've got to known this fantastic duo when they were put in the spotlight by the French label, Kitsuné, using their cover Favourite Things on their 7th Kitsuné Maison Compilation, and also Ministry of Sound and Sisterphunk used their tracks in their compilations, Mashed 5 and Sisters.

Anyhow Voluspa is a heavenly album, 11 songs full of amazingness and poppy synth-explosions.
Not only the aforementioned singles are great, also the new tracks are sweet.
Opener Dance Around The Fire is full of electronic strings and synths followed by the best song, Hide me.
For some reason, I always hear "Fuck Me In The Eye" instead of "Look Me In The Eye" in the eponymous song. I must be sick.

Anyhow if you're a fan of electro-chill music, The Golden Filter really is something for you.
Their songs have the power to stick in your head for weeks, and believe me it's hard to get them out of there.

THUNDERBIIIIIIRD!

Tracklist:

1. "Dance Around The Fire" 4:25
2. "Hide Me" 3:52
3. "Look Me in the Eye" 4:31
4. "Moonlight Fantasy" 4:28
5. "Solid Gold" 5:28
6. "The Underdogs" 4:24
7. "Stardust" 6:41
8. "Frejya's Ghost" 4:38
9. "Kiss Her Goodbye" 1:39
10. "Nerida's Gone" 3:17
11. "Thunderbird" 5:30

The dramatic South.

As you might know Belgium is divided in two. The Dutch-speaking part and the French-speaking part have both a great alternative music-scene. However, there isn't many (almost zero) interaction between the two region's. Most Dutch-speaking people don't know anything about the French scene.
This is also the fault of the media who're focussing on their own region and on the rest of the world, but the other part of the country seems to be a taboo.

So as a Dutch-speaking citizen, I've to discover my southern neighbours myself.
Last week, I had the great honour to listen to the new album of My Cheap Little Dictaphone (MCLD).
Their album is called The Tragic Tale Of A Genius, it is released on March 22 2010.
MCLD is a sideproject of frontmen Redboy, member of another Walloon band called Hollywood Pornstars.

The Tragic Tale Of A Genius is actually a concept album telling the tragic tale of a young musician, it's based on the life of Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys).
It's a sort of alternative rock-opera. They really remind of bands like Shearwater and Muse. The style is somewhat dramatic and quite epic rock. This also means a whole bunch of instruments (more than 30!) with many strings of course.
In this orchestral setting MCLD created 13 magnificent songs.

My favourite song is No Self Esteem, it really reminds me of a song of Muse.
Anyhow there are no bad songs on this album.
And since I'm a big fan of this kind of epic indie, and there isn't a band in Belgium who's making such music, MCLD gained a new fan! I might go see them in May in Brussels (Nuits Botanique, Cirque Royal, 8 May).

Tracklist:

01. Overture
02. Piano Waltz
03. He's Not There
04. What Are You Waiting For
05. Holy Grail
06. Shine On
07. Slow Me Down
08. In My Head
09. What The Devil Says
10. No Self Esteem
11. Tragic Tale Of Genius
12. A Man With No Soul
13. Face To Face

Parisian Indians.

I'm must admit, I was never a big fan of CocoRosie. I've checked their Myspace a couple times but it never could convince me to listen more.
However, I've listened to their new album, Grey Oceans, and I feel stupid that I've never liked them.

Cause my dear readers, Grey Oceans is a magnificent album. The two popular American sisters, Sierra (Rosie) en Bianca (Coco) Cassady, who're currently residing in Paris have managed to deliver an awesome LP.
However, they really have to win a prize for the ugliest cover art EVER.

The album is not comparable with any other musicians I know. They use so many different styles, but let's call it "freak folk".
Sometimes it's a quiet harp other times you can hear tribal beats and synths or Hip-Hop music.

But the freakiest things are the great voices of the Cassady sisters. They're like the crazy cousins of Joanna Newsom.

Anyhow the albums' first two songs are my favourites, especially Smokey Taboo, which demonstrates the influence of Native-American music.
Title track Grey Oceans is a beautiful slow song, with nice piano-playing and a moving cello.

I don't really know their older albums, but a friend told me that the new LP is more constant than the others. I find it very original music and it's certainly one of the highlights of this week.

Anyhow I won't bore you with more details, just listen some tracks please.
Grey Oceans is set for May 11 2010.

Tracklist:

01 Trinity's Crying
02 Smokey Taboo
03 Hopscotch
04 Undertaker
05 Grey Oceans
06 R.I.P. Burn Face
07 The Moon Asked the Crow
08 Lemonade
09 Gallows
10 Fairy Paradise
11 Here I Come
